Hey guys
I’m new to this site this is my first post. I am 17 and have been making whips for around 2 years. I live in NSW in a town called Nymboida, have learnt most of my skills from the Ron Edwards whips making book and from trial and error haha. I am also getting quite good at whip cracking too, have not gone to any comps yet.
Now that you know who i am!!! my question is how do i balance a kangaroo leather stock whip???? I have tried putting lead in the handle this makes the whip work heaps better, but i don’t know how to calculate the amount of lead to put in the handle for the weight of the thong. Hope this question is not too hard to answer.
Regards

Hi Nathan
The balance of the whip has more to do with the correct taper of the thong and the attachment of the correct size fall. as for weight in the handle versus the thong it is best to keep the weight of the handle lighter than the thong. Don't go overboard with the lead. There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to weighting stockwhips especially shot loading. which is usually used to substitute for incorrect taper and/or construction methods.
hope this helps.

Cheers
Chris

hey chirs
Thanks for that info it makes sense i can’t find anything on the net about balancing a whip, next time i make some whips i will experiment a bit, let ya know how i go.
If anybody else out there has any other suggestions about balancing a stock whip it would be greatly appreciated.
Nathan
