Hi! everyone. I would like to know if there is any given distance from the keeper of a thong too the max thickness of the swell. At this stage I have been working on 6 inches for a 6 foot whip. All so dose this distance change on the size of the whip.
Your help would be greatful.comfort

G'day Bob
I work on 6-8 inches depending on the length of the thong ...
Usually start at the keeper at about 12mm and taper up to about 16mm...
You'll find that this will give the thong more feel with the weight being further down the thong .
This is something that you just have to play around with ....
It does make quite a bit of difference having the swell to just having a straight throated thong .

Looking forward to catching up at Stanthorpe ...
Cheers mate
Chris

Thanks Chris. What a terrific site. Some of my earlier whips I didn't have any swell at all compared to what I make now and yes I can tell the difference. I was getting concerned that I was getting the weight down too far in the thong.

At this stage I'll be at Stanthorpe about lunch time on Fryday, so you and Kerri have a safe trip and I'll see you their.

It's several my whip

the new one (I made this in last week )is redhide stock whip 6 plait -it have 16 mm
my oldest whip is thickest -have 20mm. It's was made about 4 years ago. Is made rether in hungarian style than australian but I like this style.

I have a second qwestion. How stiff should be stockwhip? like bullwhip or litle more flexible ? I don't prefer to stiff whips becouse make hard flick cracks

Hi
Sorry for the late reply .
i have been caught up with APWA stuff .
The thong of a stockwhip should be plaited as tight as you can get it without breaking the strands .
They will tend to be stiff to start with but will loosen a little with use .
if they are floppy to start with then they will jut get looser as they are used and you will end up with a whip that is more like a peice of rope to crck than a whip.
Hope this helps .
Cheers
Chris
