hello everyone,

i have a question about tying the knots on romals. from what i gather you start off by interweaving the lace for the knot into the plait of the rein then tie the knot whick i assume would be a ring knot to build up a fondation then tie your button or gaucho over this foundation. is this the correct method? or is there another way to do this? i ask as i have never made them before and would like to make a set for my tack.

thanks robert

when I'm putting knots on I use tape either electrical or athletic tape. I've never had one slip and it's easier to build the size and shape of the foundation.
Hope this helps Mike

Hi Mike,
I had wondered about using electrical tape for a foundation. I have used it on a dowel for a knot foundation for practicing tying. It has held up well for over a year now. But I was worried about the long term viability of the tape for real applications. I think I'll try that now. When I think about it, I've changed lighting fixtures out of houses that I know have to be more than twenty years old and the tape is still strong. So your suggestion makes sense.

If they are working reins and will get alot of use I might go ahead and tie a ring knot and then go over with my tape. That way it would have a good anchor for the tape. Some people worry that athletic tape will trap water if it gets wet. But a fella could seal the tape with some sealer. I wouldn't think you would have that problem with electrical tape. I dont think the tape breaking down should be a issue either. Whish ya luck!!
